श्रुत्वैवं वचनं तस्या मन्थरायास्तु कैकयि ।
किंचिदुत्थाय शयनात्स्वास्तीर्णादिदमब्रवीत् ॥२-९-८॥
śrutvaivaṃ vacanaṃ tasyā mantharāyāstu kaikayī |
kiṃcidutthāya śayanātsvāstīrṇādidamabravīt ॥2-9-8॥
Translation
"Having heard those words of Manthara, Kaikeyi rose slightly from her comfortable, well-spread bed and spoke these words."

English Commentary
- The Shift in Posture: The phrase kiṃcidutthāya ("having risen slightly") is significant. Until this point, Kaikeyi was likely reclining, relaxed, and unbothered. Manthara's instigation has now piqued her interest enough to disturb her rest. She sits up, physically marking a transition from passivity to active engagement with Manthara's plot.\n\n2. The Contrast of the Environment: The adjective svāstīrṇāt ("well-spread" or luxurious) regarding her bed highlights the comfort and security Kaikeyi currently enjoys. She is surrounded by luxury, unaware that the conversation she is about to fully engage in will ultimately lead to the loss of this very comfort (widowhood and emotional isolation).\n\n3. Kaikeyi's State of Mind: At this specific juncture in the narrative, Kaikeyi is often interpreted as being surprised or even initially dismissive of Manthara's doom-mongering, maintaining her love for Rama.
