जटाजिनधरा: काले वल्कलोत्तरवासस: ।
ऋषयस्त्ववगाहन्ते नदीं मन्दाकिनीं प्रिये ॥ ॥२-९५-६॥
Jaṭājinadharāḥ kāle valkalottaravāsasaḥ । Ṛṣayastvavagāhante nadīṃ mandākinīṃ priye ॥ ॥2-95-6॥
Translation
O beloved, Rishis wearing matted locks and deerskins, and clad in bark garments, are bathing in the river Mandakini at the appointed time.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे प्रिये! जटा और मृगचर्म धारण करने वाले तथा वल्कल वस्त्र (पेड़ की छाल) पहनने वाले ऋषिगण उचित समय (स्नान बेला) पर इस मन्दाकिनी नदी में स्नान (अवगाहन) कर रहे हैं।
English Commentary
Rama shifts focus from wildlife to the ascetics living in the forest. He points out the Rishis bathing in the river, adhering to their strict schedules (kāle). Their appearance is described in detail: jaṭā (matted hair), ajina (deerskin), and valkala (bark robes). This scene imbues the river with sanctity. For Sita, witnessing the holy sages validates their own lifestyle of asceticism. It transforms the riverbank into a sacred space of ritual and purification.

नदी के भौतिक सौंदर्य के बाद अब राम उसके आध्यात्मिक पक्ष का वर्णन करते हैं। मन्दाकिनी केवल पशु-पक्षियों के लिए नहीं, बल्कि तपस्वियों के लिए भी आश्रय है। ऋषियों की वेशभूषा—'जटा', 'अजिन' (मृगचर्म) और 'वल्कल'—वन के वातावरण के अनुकूल है। 'काले' (समय पर) शब्द ऋषियों की दिनचर्या और अनुशासन को दर्शाता है। राम सीता को यह दिखाकर पवित्रता का अनुभव कराना चाहते हैं। जहाँ ऋषि स्नान करते हैं, वह जल साधारण नहीं, तीर्थ बन जाता है।
