Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
महात्मनौ महाभागौ सर्वलक्षणलक्षितौ ।
तौ कदाचित् समेतानाम् ऋषीणाम् भावितात्मनाम् ॥१-४-१४॥
Mahātmanau mahābhāgau sarvalakṣaṇalakṣitau |
Tau kadācit sametānām ṛṣīṇām bhāvitātmanām ॥1-4-14॥
Translation
Once, those two great-souled and illustrious brothers, who were endowed with all auspicious bodily marks, recited this poem in the midst of an assembly of Sages whose souls were purified by penance.

English Commentary
This verse serves as a narrative bridge, setting the specific scene for the emotional reaction that follows in the next verses. 1. Mahātmanau (Great Souled) Valmiki refers to the boys as Mahatmanau. In Sanskrit literature, this term usually implies someone who has transcended petty ego and is aligned with Dharma. Despite their youth, their "souls are great," implying a maturity beyond their years. 2. Mahābhāgau (Highly Fortunate) This is a subtle hint at their destiny. Bhāga means "portion" or "luck." While they are currently living in a forest sleeping on the floor, they are "Greatly Fortunate" because they are the sons of Rama and Sita, and they are the sole carriers of the Ramayana. Their "great fortune" is about to manifest as they reunite with their father. 3. Bhāvitātmanām (Purified Souls) This adjective describes the audience (the Rishis). Bhāvana implies steeping, soaking, or purifying the mind through constant meditation. This distinction is crucial: The audience consists of people who have conquered their emotions and senses. Therefore, if these sages are moved to tears (as described in the next verses), it proves the extraordinary power of Kusha and Lava's singing. It is easy to make a common man cry with a sad song; it is very difficult to shake the composure of a stoic Sage.
