हा स्वप्नः सत्यमेवैतद् कथं रामेण हन्यसे ।
त्वं मृत्योरपि मृत्युः स्याः कथं मृत्युवशं गतः ॥६-११४-४८॥
hā svapnaḥ satyamevaitad kathaṃ rāmeṇa hanyase |
tvaṃ mṛtyorapi mṛtyuḥ syāḥ kathaṃ mṛtyuvaśaṃ gataḥ ॥6-114-48॥
Translation
Alas! Is this a dream or is it indeed the truth? How can you be killed by Shri Rama? You, who were the Death of Death itself, how have you fallen under the sway of Death?
हिंदी अनुवाद
हा! क्या यह स्वप्न है या सत्य ही है? आप श्री राम द्वारा कैसे मारे जा सकते हैं? आप तो मृत्यु के भी मृत्यु थे, फिर आप मृत्यु के वश में कैसे हो गए?
English Commentary
The cognitive dissonance of the survivor. Mandodari questions reality—is this a dream? Ravana was the 'Death of Death' (mrityorapi mrityuh), having conquered Yamaraja. For such a being to succumb to death seems metaphysically impossible to her. This highlights the absolute supremacy of Shri Rama's power; He accomplished what the Universe thought was impossible—killing the killer of Death.

मन्दोदरी को अपनी आँखों पर विश्वास नहीं हो रहा। रावण 'कालनेमि' था, यमराज को भी डराने वाला। उसे 'मृत्यु की मृत्यु' माना जाता था। ऐसे व्यक्ति का मर जाना एक असंभव विरोधाभास लगता है। यह श्लोक अविश्वास (denial) की अवस्था को दर्शाता है जो गहरे सदमे में स्वाभाविक है। जो दूसरों को मृत्यु बांटता था, आज वह स्वयं उसका ग्रास बन गया।
