Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
शीर्येत पुष्पितो भूत्वा न फलानि प्रदर्शयन् ।
तस्य नानुभवेदर्थं यस्य हेतोः स रोप्यते ॥६-१३१-७॥
śīryeta puṣpito bhūtvā na phalāni pradarśayan |
tasya nānubhavedarthaṃ yasya hetoḥ sa ropyate ॥6-131-7॥
Translation
If, after flowering, it withers away without showing fruits, then the purpose for which it was planted is not experienced (by the planter).
हिंदी अनुवाद
(यदि वह वृक्ष) पुष्पित होकर भी फल दिखाए बिना ही सूख जाए, तो जिसके लिए उसे रोपा गया था, उस अर्थ (प्रयोजन) का अनुभव (रोपने वाला) नहीं कर पाता।
English Commentary
This verse completes the metaphor. A tree's purpose isn't just to be big or have flowers (virtues); it must bear fruit (governance/protection). Bharata argues that if Shri Rama, having all the qualities of a king, does not actually rule, he is like a sterile tree. The 'fruit' of a king is the welfare of his subjects. Without ruling, Shri Rama's potential remains unfulfilled for the people who look up to him.

रूपक का निष्कर्ष यहाँ है। यदि विशाल वृक्ष पर फूल तो आएं पर फल न लगें और वह सूख जाए, तो माली का परिश्रम व्यर्थ है। भाव यह है कि यदि श्री राम जैसा योग्य व्यक्ति राजा बनकर प्रजा का पालन (फल) न करे, तो उनके जन्म और गुणों का कोई लाभ प्रजा को नहीं मिलेगा। प्रजा की रक्षा और पालन ही राजा का 'फल' है।
