स तौ मधुरया वाचा सौम्यया प्रीणयन्न् इव ।
उवाच वत्स माम् विद्धि वयस्यम् पितुर् आत्मनः ॥ ॥३-१४-३॥
Sa tau madhurayā vācā saumyayā prīṇayann iva । Uvāca vatsa mām viddhi vayasyam pitur ātmanaḥ ॥ ॥3-14-3॥
Translation
He spoke to them in a sweet and gentle voice, as if delighting them, saying: "Child, know me to be a friend of your father."

उसने (जटायु ने) मधुर और सौम्य वाणी से उन्हें प्रसन्न करते हुए कहा—"हे वत्स! मुझे तुम अपने पिता का मित्र जानो (समझो)।"
English Commentary
The tension dissolves instantly with Jatayu’s response. The juxtaposition of his terrifying form with his 'madhuraya vacha' (sweet voice) and 'saumaya' (gentle) demeanor signals his nobility. He addresses Rama affectionately as 'Vatsa' (Child/Dear one), immediately establishing a paternal bond. His credential is the most powerful one possible in this context: "friend of your father." In a hostile land, identifying as a peer of Dasharatha ('vayasyam') transforms him from a potential threat to a guardian figure. Jatayu intelligently de-escalates the situation, offering emotional comfort ('prinayann iva') to the exiled princes.
