अवष्टब्ध धनुम् रामम् क्रुद्धम् च रिपु घातिनम् ।
ददर्श आश्रमम् आगम्य खरः सह पुरःसरैः ॥३-२५-१॥
avaṣṭabdha dhanum rāmam kruddham ca ripu ghātinam |
dadarśa āśramam āgamya kharaḥ saha puraḥsaraiḥ ॥3-25-1॥
Translation
Arriving at the hermitage with his vanguard, Khara saw Rama, the destroyer of enemies, standing angry and holding his bow firm.

अपने अनुचरों के साथ आश्रम में आकर खर ने शत्रुओं का नाश करने वाले राम को देखा, जो क्रोधित होकर अपने धनुष को थामे (टैंककर) खड़े थे।
English Commentary
The visual confrontation begins. Khara arrives at the hermitage ('āśramam āgamya') and gets his first look at his target. Valmiki describes Rama in a formidable posture: 'avaṣṭabdha dhanum' (leaning on/holding the bow ready) and 'kruddham' (angry). This serves to dispel any notion of Rama as a passive hermit; he is the 'ripu ghātinam' (slayer of foes). The juxtaposition of the peaceful setting of an ashram with the angry stance of the warrior-prince highlights the disruption caused by the Rakshasas.

अब दोनों पक्ष आमने-सामने हैं। खर आश्रम पहुँचता है और राम का प्रथम दर्शन करता है। राम यहाँ 'शांत तपस्वी' के रूप में नहीं, बल्कि 'क्रुद्धम्' (क्रोधित) और 'रिपु घातिनम्' (शत्रुनाशक) रूप में हैं। 'अवष्टब्ध धनुम्'—धनुष को मजबूती से थामे हुए या उस पर झुके हुए—यह मुद्रा युद्ध के लिए पूर्ण सन्नद्धता को दिखाती है। राम का क्रोध धर्म की रक्षा के लिए है। खर, जो शिकार करने आया था, अब शिकारी (राम) के सामने खड़ा है। यह साक्षात्कार युद्ध का प्रारंभ बिंदु है।
