Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
पराक्रमज्ञो रामस्य शठो दृष्ट भयः पुरा ।
समुत्क्रांतः ततः मुक्तः तौ उभौ राक्षसौ हतौ ।
॥३-३९-१३॥
Parākramajño rāmasya śaṭho dṛṣṭa bhayaḥ purā । Samutkrāntaḥ tataḥ muktaḥ tau ubhau rākṣasau hatau ॥ ॥3-39-13॥
Translation
Knowing Rama's prowess and having seen fear (danger) from him before, I, being cunning, fled and escaped. However, both those other Rakshasas were killed.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मैं राम के पराक्रम को जानता था और पहले भी उनसे भय देख चुका था (पराजित हो चुका था)। चूँकि मैं शठ (चालाक) था, इसलिए मैं वहाँ से भाग निकला और बच गया, (किंतु) वे दोनों राक्षस मारे गए।
English Commentary
Maricha attributes his survival to his cunning (shatha) and his prior knowledge of Rama’s power (parakramajno). Unlike his companions, he had "seen the fear" before, meaning he recognized the pre-attack cues and dodged immediately. This verse underscores a stark reality: the only way to survive an encounter with Rama is to run away. His companions, lacking this prior trauma and respect for Rama's power, were instantly killed. It reinforces the idea that ignorance of Rama's power is fatal.

मारीच यहाँ अपनी जान बचने का श्रेय अपनी वीरता को नहीं, बल्कि अपनी 'शठता' (चालाकी/धूर्तता) को देता है। 'पराक्रमज्ञो'—चूँकि वह राम की शक्ति को पहले अनुभव कर चुका था, इसलिए जैसे ही उसने राम को धनुष उठाते देखा, वह भाग खड़ा हुआ। उसके साथी, जो राम को नहीं जानते थे, सीधे बाणों का शिकार बने। यह 'सर्वाइवल इंस्टिंक्ट' (जीने की इच्छा) थी। मारीच रावण को बता रहा है कि राम के सामने से भागना ही एकमात्र रक्षा है, उनसे लड़ना मृत्यु है।
