यत् यत् इच्छेत् तत् एव अस्या देयम् मत् च्छंदतो यथा ।
या च वक्ष्यति वैदेहीम् वचनम् किंचित् अप्रियम् ॥ ॥३-५४-१६॥

English Commentary
In this verse, Ravana commands the guards to treat Sita with a specific kind of indulgence. He instructs that her every wish be granted as though it were his own command (mat cchandato). This is a calculated psychological maneuver designed to create a sense of dependency and to demonstrate the benefits of submitting to him. He wants Sita to experience the power of his command serving her needs. The verse implies a pending threat in the second line regarding anyone who speaks unpleasantly to her. At this stage, Ravana is still hopeful of winning Sita over through persuasion and display of power rather than brute force. He forbids the Rakshasis from antagonizing her verbally because he fears that harshness might drive her further away or solidify her resolve against him. It shows Ravana acting out of infatuation, temporarily suppressing the natural cruelty of his minions to facilitate his courtship.

इस श्लोक में रावण अपनी दासियों को स्पष्ट निर्देश दे रहा है कि सीता के साथ कैसा व्यवहार किया जाए। यहाँ रावण का उद्देश्य सीता को यह महसूस कराना है कि लंका में उसका स्थान एक बंदी का नहीं, बल्कि एक रानी का हो सकता है, यदि वह रावण को स्वीकार कर ले। 'मत् च्छंदतो यथा' का अर्थ है कि सीता की इच्छा को रावण की इच्छा मानकर पूरा किया जाए। यह एक मनोवैज्ञानिक जाल है ताकि सीता को रावण के प्रति कृतज्ञता या निर्भरता महसूस हो। साथ ही, श्लोक का दूसरा भाग एक चेतावनी के रूप में है। रावण अभी सीता को डराने या धमकाने की स्थिति में नहीं है; वह चाहता है कि सीता स्वेच्छा से उसे अपनाए। इसलिए, वह राक्षसियों को कठोर वचन बोलने से रोकता है। यह रावण के धैर्य और काम-मोहित अवस्था को दर्शाता है, जहाँ वह अपने स्वभाव के विपरीत जाकर सीता की 'नाराजगी' मोल नहीं लेना चाहता।
