Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
सो ऽहं ते पितुराचार्य्यस्तव चैव परन्तप ।
मम त्वं वचनं कुर्वन् नातिवर्त्ते: सताङ्गतिम् ॥ ॥२-१११-४॥
So 'haṃ te piturācāryastava caiva parantapa । Mama tvaṃ vacanaṃ kurvan nātivartteḥ satāṅgatim ॥ ॥2-111-4॥
Translation
I am that Preceptor of your father and of you too, O scorcher of foes. By doing my bidding, you will not be transgressing the path of the righteous.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे परंतप! वह मैं (वशिष्ठ) तुम्हारे पिता का भी आचार्य हूँ और तुम्हारा भी। अतः मेरा वचन मानते हुए तुम सज्जनों के मार्ग का उल्लंघन नहीं करोगे।
English Commentary
Vasistha plays his trump card here. He reminds Rama that his authority supersedes even Dasharatha's, as he was the spiritual guide to both father and son. This establishes a hierarchy where the Guru stands at the apex. The implication is profound: if the Guru commands Rama to return, that command nullifies the father's previous instruction. Vasistha assures Rama that this is not a sin; rather, obeying the supreme guide constitutes the 'path of the righteous.' He is essentially offering Rama a spiritual absolution and a loophole through the rigid bind of his father's vow.

यह वशिष्ठ के तर्कों का शिखर है। वे अपनी सत्ता का पूर्ण उपयोग करते हुए कहते हैं कि वे न केवल राम के, बल्कि राजा दशरथ के भी गुरु हैं। अर्थात, पदानुक्रम (hierarchy) में वे दशरथ से भी ऊपर हैं। यदि दशरथ जीवित होते, तो वे भी वशिष्ठ की आज्ञा नहीं टालते। इसलिए, यदि राम वशिष्ठ की आज्ञा मानकर अयोध्या लौटते हैं, तो उन्हें 'पाप' या 'अधर्म' का भय नहीं होना चाहिए। वशिष्ठ स्वयं उस धर्म की जिम्मेदारी ले रहे हैं। 'नातिवर्त्ते: सताङ्गतिम्' (सज्जनों की गति का उल्लंघन नहीं होगा) कहकर वे राम को आश्वस्त करते हैं कि गुरु की आज्ञा पालन करना ही सर्वोच्च धर्म है, चाहे वह पिता की आज्ञा के विपरीत ही क्यों न दिखे।
