Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
बहिर्यात्रां न गच्छन्ति चित्रमाल्यधरा नरा: ।
नोत्सवा: सम्प्रवर्त्तन्ते रामशोकार्दिते पुरे ॥ ॥२-११४-२६॥
Bahiryātrāṃ na gacchanti citramālyadharā narāḥ । Notsavāḥ sampravarttante rāmaśokārdite pure ॥ ॥2-114-26॥
Translation
"In this city tormented by grief for Rama, men wearing colorful garlands no longer go out for pleasure trips, nor are any festivals being celebrated."

"राम के शोक से पीड़ित इस नगर में लोग अब रंग-बिरंगी मालाएं पहनकर सैर-सपाटे (बाहर की यात्रा) के लिए नहीं निकलते और न ही यहाँ अब कोई उत्सव मनाए जाते हैं।"
English Commentary
This verse highlights the suspension of public social life. Bahiryātrā refers to excursions, picnics, or outings for pleasure, which are typical of a thriving, happy citizenry. The image of men wearing citramālya (variegated/colorful garlands) represents the joy of community gatherings. Bharata notes that because the city is Rama-shoka-ardite (tormented by the grief for Rama), all such festivities have ceased. There is no celebration, no public gathering, and no display of happiness. The city has withdrawn into a shell of mourning.

यहाँ सामाजिक जीवन (social life) के विघटन का चित्र है। 'बहिर्यात्रा' का अर्थ है पिकनिक या मनोरंजन के लिए नगर से बाहर जाना, जो एक खुशहाल समाज का लक्षण है। 'चित्रमाल्यधरा' (विचित्र मालाएं पहने हुए) लोग अब नहीं दिखते। 'न उत्सवाः सम्प्रवर्त्तन्ते'—उत्सवों का बंद होना सामूहिक अवसाद (collective depression) का सूचक है। राम के शोक ने नगर की सार्वजनिक गतिविधियों को पूरी तरह से रोक दिया है। लोग अपने घरों में सिमट गए हैं और सामाजिक मेल-मिलाप समाप्त हो गया है।
