न च शक्नोम्यहं द्रषुं पूर्वं तथा सुखम् ।
हतहर्षं निरानन्दं पुनर्जनमवाङ्मुखम् ॥ ॥२-१४-१८॥
Na ca śaknomyahaṃ draṣuṃ pūrvaṃ tathā sukham । Hataharṣaṃ nirānandaṃ punarjanamavāṅmukham ॥ ॥2-14-18॥
Translation
I am unable to look upon the people, who were previously so happy, now stripped of joy, cheerless, and hanging their heads in sorrow.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मैं प्रजा को, जो पहले सुखी थी, अब इस प्रकार हर्ष से रहित, आनंदशून्य और दुःख से मुख नीचे किए हुए देखने में समर्थ नहीं हूँ।
English Commentary
Here, Dasaratha speaks not just as a father, but as a compassionate King. He anticipates the devastation that the news of Rama's exile will bring to his subjects. He contrasts their previous state—full of anticipation and joy—with the impending gloom where they will be "stripped of joy" (hataharsham) and "hanging their heads" (avangmukham). A king's primary duty is the welfare and happiness of his people; Dasaratha feels a profound sense of failure and shame. He admits he lacks the strength to witness the collective heartbreak of Ayodhya. This verse highlights his empathy; even while facing death and family collapse, the suffering of his citizens weighs heavily on his conscience. It signifies the tragedy of a benevolent ruler forced by circumstance to become the cause of his people's misery.

महाराज दशरथ यहाँ एक राजा के रूप में अपनी वेदना व्यक्त कर रहे हैं। एक राजा का धर्म प्रजा को सुखी रखना है, परंतु कैकेयी की हठ के कारण पूरी अयोध्या शोक में डूबने वाली है। दशरथ कल्पना कर पा रहे हैं कि जैसे ही राम के वनवास का समाचार बाहर जाएगा, प्रजा की क्या दशा होगी। 'अवाङ्मुखम्' (नीचे मुख किए हुए) शब्द उस शर्म और निराशा को दर्शाता है जो प्रजा महसूस करेगी। दशरथ को ग्लानि हो रही है कि जिस प्रजा ने कल उत्सव की तैयारी की थी, आज उसे वे केवल दुःख दे रहे हैं। वे अपनी आँखों से अपने प्रिय जनों का उत्साह भंग होते नहीं देख सकते। यह उनकी संवेदनशीलता और प्रजावत्सलता का प्रमाण है कि अपने व्यक्तिगत दुःख के बीच भी उन्हें प्रजा के दुःख की चिंता सता रही है।
