सोऽहमिक्ष्ह्वाकुभिः सर्वैर्नरेन्द्रैः परिपालितम् ।
श्रेयसा योक्तुकामोऽस्मि सुखार्हमखिलं जगत् ॥ ॥२-२-५॥
so'hamikṣvākubhiḥ sarvairnarendraiḥ paripālitam |
śreyasā yoktukāmo'smi sukhārhamakhilaṃ jagat ॥2-2-5॥
Translation
I, who have followed in the footsteps of all the previous Ikshvaku monarchs who protected this land, desire to bestow supreme welfare upon this entire world (my subjects), which is worthy of happiness.

मैं (दशरथ) समस्त इक्ष्वाकुवंशी राजाओं (मेरे पूर्वजों) द्वारा पालित इस सम्पूर्ण जगत (राज्य की प्रजा) को—जो सुख भोगने के योग्य है—कल्याण (श्रेय) से जोड़ना चाहता हूँ।
English Commentary
King Dasharatha begins his address with deep humility and a sense of historical responsibility. By invoking the 'Ikshvakus' (his lineage), he acknowledges that the kingdom is a legacy nurtured by illustrious ancestors, not his own creation. He positions himself merely as the current custodian in a long line of dutiful monarchs ('Narendraiḥ') who have protected the realm.
The description of his subjects as 'Sukharham' (deserving of happiness) reflects his benevolent philosophy of kingship—he views the people's well-being as an entitlement they possess, which he must fulfill. The phrase 'desire to bestow welfare' ('Shreyas') is the prelude to his main proposal. Implicitly, Dasharatha suggests that the ultimate welfare he can offer the kingdom, to ensure its continued prosperity after his reign, is the installation of Prince Rama as the Crown Prince.

महाराज दशरथ अपने संबोधन का आरम्भ अपने पूर्वजों के प्रति कृतज्ञता और राजधर्म की मर्यादा के साथ करते हैं। 'इक्ष्वाकुभिः' शब्द का प्रयोग करके वे यह स्पष्ट करते हैं कि यह राज्य उनकी व्यक्तिगत संपत्ति नहीं है, बल्कि यह इक्ष्वाकु वंश की धरोहर है जिसे अनेक महान राजाओं (नरेन्द्रैः) ने पीढ़ियों से सींचा और सुरक्षित रखा है। वे स्वयं को उस महान परंपरा का केवल एक संरक्षक मानते हैं।
यहाँ प्रजा के लिए 'सुखार्हम' (सुख के योग्य) विशेषण का प्रयोग दशरथ के वात्सल्य को दर्शाता है। उनका मानना है कि उनकी प्रजा सुख की अधिकारिणी है। 'श्रेयसा' (कल्याण) से जोड़ने का गूढ़ अर्थ है—राज्य का भार श्रीराम जैसे योग्य हाथों में सौंपना। दशरथ यह भूमिका बाँध रहे हैं कि अपने पूर्वजों के ऋण से मुक्त होने और प्रजा का हित सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अब श्रीराम का अभिषेक आवश्यक है।
