मयाप्याचरितं पूर्वैः पन्थानमनुगच्छता ।
प्रजा नित्यमनिद्रेण यथाशक्त्यभिरक्षिताः ॥ ॥२-२-६॥
mayāpyācaritaṃ pūrvaiḥ panthānamanugacchatā |
prajā nityamanidreṇa yathāśaktyabhirakṣitāḥ ॥2-2-6॥
Translation
Following the path trodden by my predecessors (ancestors), I too have protected my subjects to the best of my ability, remaining ever vigilant and sleepless (alert).

मेरे पूर्वजों द्वारा आचरित (अपनाए गए) मार्ग का अनुसरण करते हुए, मैंने भी अपनी शक्ति के अनुसार, सदा आलस्य रहित (जाग्रत) होकर प्रजा की रक्षा की है।
English Commentary
This verse appears in the Ayodhya Kanda (Canto 2) of the Valmiki Ramayana. King Dasharatha is addressing a grand assembly comprising ministers, vassals, and citizens. Before proposing the coronation of his eldest son, Sri Rama, as the Crown Prince (Yuvaraja), the aged King reflects upon his own long reign. With great humility and dignity, Dasharatha asserts that he has not deviated from the righteous path established by his illustrious ancestors of the Ikshvaku lineage. He emphasizes that his governance was not a matter of personal whim, but an adherence to the ancestral code of Dharma. The word 'anidreṇa' (sleeplessly or vigilantly) highlights the King's supreme dedication, implying that he sacrificed personal comfort and remained constantly alert to ensure the welfare and safety of his subjects. This declaration establishes Dasharatha's moral authority and justifies his decision to now seek rest by handing over the burden of sovereignty to Rama, having fulfilled his duties to the best of his capacity.

यह श्लोक वाल्मीकि रामायण के अयोध्याकाण्ड (सर्ग २) से लिया गया है। यहाँ महाराज दशरथ, अपने मंत्रियों, सामंतों और प्रजाजनों की एक विशाल सभा को संबोधित कर रहे हैं। वे अपने ज्येष्ठ पुत्र, श्री राम का राज्याभिषेक (युवराज पद पर) करने का प्रस्ताव रखने से पूर्व, अपने शासनकाल का सिंहावलोकन कर रहे हैं। महाराज दशरथ अत्यंत विनम्रता और सत्यनिष्ठा के साथ कहते हैं कि उन्होंने इक्ष्वाकु वंश के महान पूर्वजों द्वारा स्थापित धर्म और न्याय के मार्ग का ही अनुसरण किया है। उन्होंने स्वेच्छाचार न करके, परंपरा का पालन किया है। यहाँ 'अनिद्रेण' (बिना सोए/जाग्रत) शब्द राजा की परम कर्तव्यनिष्ठा को दर्शाता है, जिसका अर्थ है कि उन्होंने अपने व्यक्तिगत सुख और विश्राम का त्याग करके, प्रजा के हित के लिए सदैव तत्पर रहकर कार्य किया है। यह कथन दशरथ जी के शासन की पारदर्शिता को प्रकट करता है, जिससे वे अब अपना भारी उत्तरदायित्व अगली पीढ़ी को सौंपने के लिए नैतिक रूप से तैयार हैं।
