न देवलोकाक्रमणम् नामरत्वमहम् वृणे ।
ऐश्वर्यम् वापि लोकानाम् कामये न त्वया विना ॥ ॥२-३१-५॥
na devalokākramaṇam nāmaratvamaham vṛṇe |
aiśvaryam vāpi lokānām kāmaye na tvayā vinā ॥2-31-5॥
Translation
I do not desire the attainment of the world of gods, nor immortality, nor even the sovereignty of all the worlds, without you.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मैं आपके बिना न तो देवलोक चाहता हूँ, न अमरत्व, और न ही समस्त लोकों का ऐश्वर्य (साम्राज्य) चाहता हूँ।
English Commentary
This is one of the most definitive verses regarding Lakshmana’s character, illustrating the concept of Ananyagatitva (total reliance on one entity). Lakshmana declares that the highest prizes conceivable in human or divine existence—heaven, immortality, and universal sovereignty—are worthless to him if they come without Rama. While others might seek power or eternal life, Lakshmana's sole definition of happiness is proximity to Rama. The phrase "not without you" encapsulates his entire philosophy. It demonstrates that his desire to accompany Rama is not born out of mere brotherly duty or warrior ethics, but out of a spiritual emptiness that he feels at the mere thought of separation from Rama.
