Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अनुज्ञातश्च भवता पूर्वमेव यदस्म्यहम् ।
किमिदानीम् पुनरिदम् क्रियते मे निवारणम् ॥ ॥२-३१-७॥
anujñātaśca bhavatā pūrvameva yadasmyaham |
kimidānīm punaridam kriyate me nivāraṇam ॥2-31-7॥
Translation
Since I have already been permitted by you earlier, why is this prevention being imposed on me now?

(लक्ष्मण कहते हैं) आपने मुझे पहले ही अनुमति दे दी थी, फिर अब इस समय मुझे क्यों रोका जा रहा है?
English Commentary
Lakshmana employs logic to counter Rama. He claims he was "already permitted" (pūrvameva). This implies an implicit, lifelong understanding between the brothers that they are inseparable. Lakshmana argues that in all previous contexts (perhaps referring to the preparations for coronation or their general way of life), his presence was assumed and accepted. He asks why the rules are changing now. By questioning this sudden "prevention" (nivāraṇam), Lakshmana suggests that separating them now would be a violation of their established bond. He challenges Rama to explain why tragedy should alter the fundamental dynamic of their relationship.

लक्ष्मण यहाँ एक तार्किक प्रश्न उठाते हैं। उनका कहना है कि यह अनकहा सत्य था कि वे राम की छाया हैं। उनका साथ रहना पहले से ही निश्चित था (चाहे वह राज्याभिषेक हो या अन्य कोई कार्य)। लक्ष्मण को लगता है कि राम अब अपनी बात से पलट रहे हैं। 'पूर्वमेव' (पहले ही) का अर्थ है कि उनके रिश्ते की प्रकृति ही ऐसी है कि जहाँ राम हैं, वहाँ लक्ष्मण होंगे। लक्ष्मण राम को उनके 'सत्यवादी' होने की याद दिला रहे हैं—कि जब हमारा साथ रहना तय था, तो अब विपत्ति आने पर मुझे अलग क्यों किया जा रहा है? यह प्रश्न राम के हृदय को स्पर्श करता है।
