यदर्थम् प्रतिषेधो मे क्रियते गन्तुमिच्छतः ।
एतदिच्छामि विज्ञातुम् सम्शयो हि ममानघ ॥ ॥२-३१-८॥
yadartham pratiṣedho me kriyate gantumicchataḥ |
etadicchāmi vijñātum samśayo hi mamānagha ॥2-31-8॥
Translation
O Sinless one! I wish to go, yet I am being forbidden; I wish to know the reason for this, for a doubt has arisen in me.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे अनघ! मैं वन जाने का इच्छुक हूँ, फिर भी जिस कारण से मुझे रोका जा रहा है, वह मैं जानना चाहता हूँ। मेरे मन में संदेह उत्पन्न हो गया है।
English Commentary
shifting from asserting his will to seeking understanding, Lakshmana asks for the rationale behind the refusal. Addressing Rama as Anagha (sinless/faultless), he implies that Rama's decisions are usually just, so this refusal is confusing him. He demands to know the specific reason ("Yadartham") why his request is being denied. Lakshmana expresses that he has a "doubt" (samśaya). This doubt is likely an insecurity: Does Rama feel Lakshmana is incapable? Or is Rama trying to protect him like a child? Lakshmana wants the specific objection stated clearly so he can refute it or address it, proving his eligibility to accompany Rama.

लक्ष्मण भावनात्मक आवेग के बाद अब कारण (Logic) मांग रहे हैं। वे राम को 'अनघ' (पापरहित) कहते हैं, जिसका अर्थ है कि राम कभी कुछ गलत नहीं करते। लक्ष्मण पूछते हैं कि क्या उनसे कोई अपराध हुआ है या क्या राम को उनकी क्षमता पर संदेह है? 'सम्शयो हि मम' (मुझे संदेह है)—लक्ष्मण को डर है कि कहीं राम का प्रेम कम तो नहीं हो गया, या क्या राम उन्हें वन के कष्टों के योग्य नहीं समझते? यह लक्ष्मण की व्यग्रता है जो कारण जानना चाहती है ताकि वे उस कारण का निवारण कर सकें और साथ जाने की अनुमति प्राप्त कर सकें।
