Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
त्वामहम् सत्यमिच्छामि नानृतम् पुरुषर्षभ ।
प्रत्यक्षम् तव सत्येन सुकृतेन च ते शपे ॥२-३४-४८॥
Tvāmaham satyamicchāmi nānṛtam puruṣarṣabha । Pratyakṣam tava satyena sukṛtena ca te śape ॥ ॥2-34-48॥
Translation
O Best among Men! I wish for you to be truthful, not untruthful. I swear this before your very eyes, by your own Truth and by your accumulated merits.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे पुरुषश्रेष्ठ! मैं आपको सत्यवादी देखना चाहता हूँ, झूठा नहीं। यह बात मैं आपके समक्ष, आपके ही सत्य और आपके पुण्यों (सुकृत) की शपथ लेकर कहता हूँ।
English Commentary
Rama takes a solemn oath here, but with a twist. Instead of swearing by himself, he swears by Dasharatha’s own 'Truth' and 'Merit' (Sukrita). This implies that if Rama does not go to the forest, Dasharatha’s life-long accumulation of spiritual merit will be nullified. It is a powerful rhetorical device to compel the King to accept the situation; Rama is essentially saying, 'I am doing this to save your soul, not just to obey an order.'

राम यहाँ अत्यंत गंभीर शपथ ले रहे हैं। सामान्यतः व्यक्ति अपनी सौगंध खाता है, परन्तु राम दशरथ के 'सत्य' और 'पुण्य' की शपथ खा रहे हैं। इसका अर्थ है कि यदि राम वन नहीं गए, तो दशरथ का संचित पुण्य और सत्य नष्ट हो जाएगा। यह पिता को विवश करने का एक भावनात्मक तरीका है ताकि वे मोह त्याग कर धर्म का पालन करें। राम यह जता रहे हैं कि उनका वन जाना पिता के आत्मिक कल्याण के लिए अनिवार्य है।
