Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
माता ते पितरम् देवि ततह् केकयमब्रवीत् ।
शम्स मे जीव वा मा वा न मामपहसिष्यसि ॥ ॥२-३५-२३॥
Mātā te pitaram devi tataḥ kekayamabravīt । Śamsa me jīva vā mā vā na māmapahasiṣyasi ॥ ॥2-35-23॥
Translation
O Queen, then your mother spoke to the King of Kekaya: "Tell me the secret, whether you live or die. You shall not mock me."
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे देवि! तब तुम्हारी माता ने (तुम्हारे पिता) केकयराज से कहा—"चाहे तुम जीवित रहो या मर जाओ, मुझे वह बात (हँसी का कारण) बताओ। तुम मेरी हँसी नहीं उड़ा सकते।"
English Commentary
This verse captures the peak of callousness in Sumantra’s anecdote. A spouse is traditionally the protector of their partner's life, yet Kaikeyi’s mother explicitly states indifference to her husband's survival ("whether you live or die"). Her vanity—the fear of being mocked—outweighs her husband's life. Sumantra highlights this chilling ultimatum to hold a mirror up to Kaikeyi. He implies that by insisting on the boons despite knowing they will kill Dasharatha, she is embodying the same monstrous indifference her mother displayed.

यह श्लोक क्रूरता की पराकाष्ठा को दर्शाता है। एक पत्नी का धर्म पति के प्राणों की रक्षा करना है, किन्तु कैकेयी की माता ने अपने अहंकार (कि पति उस पर हँस रहे हैं) को पति के जीवन से अधिक महत्व दिया। 'जीव वा मा वा' (जियो या मरो) वाक्यांश उस निष्ठुरता को उजागर करता है जो प्रेम और दांपत्य धर्म से पूरी तरह शून्य है। सुमंत्र यह प्रसंग इसलिए सुना रहे हैं ताकि कैकेयी देख सके कि वह वर्तमान में अपने पति दशरथ के साथ ठीक वैसा ही व्यवहार कर रही है जैसा उसकी माँ ने किया था।
