नृपश्चोवाच ताम् देवीम् देवि शम्सामि ते यदि ।
ततो मे मरणम् सद्यो भविष्यति न सम्शयः ॥ ॥२-३५-२२॥
Nṛpaścovāca tām devīm devi śamsāmi te yadi । Tato me maraṇam sadyo bhaviṣyati na samśayaḥ ॥ ॥2-35-22॥
Translation
The King replied to the Queen, "O Devi, if I tell you that (the reason for the laugh), then undoubtedly my death will follow instantly."
हिंदी अनुवाद
तब राजा ने उस देवी (रानी) से कहा—"हे देवि! यदि मैं तुम्हें वह (हँसी का कारण) बताऊँगा, तो निस्संदेह मेरी तत्काल मृत्यु हो जाएगी।"
English Commentary
The stakes are laid bare. King Ashwapati explicitly warns his wife that satisfying her curiosity will result in his immediate death. This is the ultimate test of a relationship: does the partner value their spouse's life over their own desire for information? Sumantra narrates this to highlight the callousness inherent in Kaikeyi's lineage. By presenting this ultimatum, the King gave the Queen a chance to retreat. Her refusal to do so (implied in the continuing narrative) mirrors Kaikeyi's refusal to rescind the exile order despite Dasharatha pleading that it will kill him.

राजा अश्वपति ने स्थिति स्पष्ट कर दी। उन्होंने अपनी पत्नी को बता दिया कि उनकी चुप्पी का कारण कोई रहस्य नहीं, बल्कि जीवन-मृत्यु का प्रश्न है। यह 'प्रेम की परीक्षा' का क्षण था। एक आदर्श पत्नी तुरंत अपनी माँग वापस ले लेती। लेकिन सुमंत्र यह प्रसंग इसलिए सुना रहे हैं क्योंकि (अगले श्लोकों में पता चलता है) कैकेयी की माँ ने कहा था, "तुम मरो या जियो, मुझे बात जाननी है।" सुमंत्र दशरथ की वर्तमान स्थिति (राम के बिना वे मर जाएंगे) की तुलना अश्वपति की उस स्थिति से कर रहे हैं, यह दिखाने के लिए कि कैकेयी के खून में ही निर्दयता है।
