Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
ततः स वरदह् साधु राजानम् प्रत्यभाषत ।
म्रियताम् ध्वम्सताम् वेयम् मा कृथास्त्वम् महीपते ॥ ॥२-३५-२५॥
Tataḥ sa varadaḥ sādhu rājānam pratyabhāṣata । Mriyatām dhvamsatām veyam mā kṛthāstvam mahīpate ॥ ॥2-35-25॥
Translation
Then that saintly boon-giver replied to the King: "Let her die or let her perish, but do not reveal the secret, O King."
हिंदी अनुवाद
तब उस साधु स्वभाव वाले वरदाता ने राजा से उत्तर दिया—"हे राजन्! वह (रानी) चाहे मरे या नष्ट हो जाए, परंतु तुम वह रहस्य प्रकट मत करो।"
English Commentary
This represents the verdict of Dharma. The sage absolves the King of his obligation to satisfy his wife's curiosity because her demand is homicidal. The boon-giver’s advice validates the principle that one need not sacrifice oneself for the sake of another's irrational or malicious whim, even if that person is a spouse. Sumantra uses this outcome to shame Kaikeyi: even the divine forces agreed that a wife making such demands deserves to be abandoned, not obeyed.

यह कहानी का निर्णायक मोड़ है। वरदाता ने स्पष्ट किया कि जो पत्नी पति के प्राणों की परवाह नहीं करती, वह त्यागने योग्य है। 'म्रियताम् ध्वम्सताम्' (मरे या नष्ट हो) अत्यंत कठोर शब्द हैं, जो यह सिद्ध करते हैं कि अधर्मी हठ के आगे झुकना धर्म नहीं है। सुमंत्र परोक्ष रूप से यह कह रहे हैं कि दशरथ को भी कैकेयी के हठ के आगे नहीं झुकना चाहिए था, या फिर कैकेयी को यह समझना चाहिए कि उसका हठ उसे विनाश की ओर ले जा रहा है, और धर्म उसके पक्ष में नहीं है।
