यदि मे याचमानस्य त्यागम् एव करिष्यसि ।
सरथो अग्निम् प्रवेक्ष्यामि त्यक्त मात्रaih त्वया ॥ ॥२-५२-४९॥
yadi me yācamānasya tyāgam eva kariṣyasi । saratho agnim pravekṣyāmi tyakta mātraiha tvayā ॥ ॥2-52-49॥
Translation
If you abandon me despite my pleading, then the very moment I am forsaken by you, I shall enter the fire along with this chariot right here.
हिंदी अनुवाद
यदि आप मुझ प्रार्थी का त्याग ही कर देंगे, तो आपके द्वारा त्यागे जाने पर मैं इसी क्षण रथ सहित अग्नि में प्रवेश कर जाऊंगा।
English Commentary
Sumantra escalates his plea to an ultimatum. Seeing that logic and requests might fail, he vows to commit suicide by entering fire (Agni Pravesh) if Rama abandons him. This is the extreme language of devotion, where separation is equated with death. Notably, he says he will enter the fire with the chariot ("Saratho"). This implies that the chariot, the symbol of his duty and the instrument of Rama's exile, has no purpose if it cannot serve Rama. He would rather destroy it and himself than return empty. It is a desperate attempt to leverage Rama's compassion to change the decision.

जब विनय काम नहीं आती, तो भक्त हठ पर उतर आता है। सुमंत्र यहाँ आत्मदाह की धमकी देते हैं। यह 'अग्नि प्रवेश' केवल आत्महत्या नहीं है, बल्कि यह एक प्रकार का 'सतीत्व' या परम निष्ठा का प्रतीक है। जैसे शरीर प्राण के बिना नहीं रह सकता, वैसे ही सुमंत्र राम के बिना अस्तित्वहीन हैं। 'सरथो' (रथ सहित) शब्द महत्वपूर्ण है—वे उस रथ को भी जला देना चाहते हैं जो राम को वापस नहीं ले जा सका। यह श्लोक सुमंत्र के शोक की तीव्रता और मानसिक स्थिति को दर्शाता है। वे राम को भावनात्मक रूप से विवश कर रहे हैं कि वे उन्हें साथ ले लें।
