Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तत् कृतेन मया प्राप्तम् रथ चर्या कृतम् सुखम् ।
आशम्से त्वत् कृतेन अहम् वन वास कृतम् सुखम् ॥ ॥२-५२-५१॥
tat kṛtena mayā prāptam ratha caryā kṛtam sukham । āśamse tvat kṛtena aham vana vāsa kṛtam sukham ॥ ॥2-52-51॥
Translation
Through your grace, I attained the happiness of performing the duties of a charioteer. Now, I wish to attain the happiness of living in the forest, also through your grace.
हिंदी अनुवाद
आपकी कृपा से ही मुझे सारथी का कार्य करने का सुख प्राप्त हुआ था। अब मैं चाहता हूँ कि आप ही की कृपा से मुझे वनवास का सुख भी प्राप्त हो।
English Commentary
Sumantra redefines the concept of happiness in this verse. He acknowledges that his past joy as a royal charioteer was granted by Rama's grace. Now, he argues that the "joy of forest life" should also be granted by Rama. This is a profound theological statement: happiness is not derived from the environment (palace vs. forest) but from the association with the Lord. Sumantra views the hardships of the forest as Sukham (happiness) simply because Rama is there. He pleads for consistency in Rama’s grace—if you allowed me to serve you in the city, allow me to serve you in the wild.

सुमंत्र यहाँ 'सुख' की परिभाषा बदल रहे हैं। पहले अयोध्या में राज-सारथी होने में सुख था क्योंकि राम वहां थे। अब वनवास में सुख है क्योंकि राम वहां हैं। 'त्वत् कृतेन' (आपकी वजह से/आपकी कृपा से) वाक्यांश का दोहराव यह सिद्ध करता है कि सुमंत्र के लिए स्थान का महत्व नहीं है, केवल राम के सान्निध्य का महत्व है। वे वनवास को कष्ट नहीं, बल्कि 'सुख' मान रहे हैं। यह भक्ति का वह स्तर है जहाँ आराध्य के साथ नर्क भी स्वर्ग समान लगता है। वे यह अधिकार जता रहे हैं कि जैसे पहले आपने मुझे सेवा दी, वैसे ही अब भी सेवा दें।
