अयोध्याम् न प्रवेक्ष्यामि प्रवेक्ष्यामि तपो वनम् ।
तयोः विलपितम् श्रुत्वा व्यसनम् च अन्ववेक्ष्य तत् ॥ ॥२-७७-१९॥
ayodhyām na pravekṣyāmi pravekṣyāmi tapo vanam । tayoḥ vilapitam śrutvā vyasanam ca anvavekṣya tat ॥ ॥2-77-19॥

English Commentary
Shatrughna makes a definitive choice: rejection of the capital city ('Ayodhyam na pravekshyami') in favor of the ascetic grove ('tapo vanam'). This parallels Rama's exile; if Rama cannot rule Ayodhya, Shatrughna wishes to share his hardship or renounce the world entirely. The narrative perspective shifts in the second line, observing the two brothers ('tayoh'—of those two) grieving. Their distress ('vyasanam') is palpable and serves as a catalyst for the emotions of those around them. It marks a moment of absolute despondency before intervention occurs.
