English Commentary
This verse expresses Shatrughna's existential crisis. He questions the very utility of his life ('jivita samarthyam') and contemplates self-immolation by entering fire ('hutashanam'). This extreme reaction underscores his dependency on Rama and Dasharatha for his identity and purpose. He describes Ayodhya, the ancient seat of the Ikshvakus, as 'shunyam' (void/empty). Despite the city being physically populated, it is spiritually and emotionally desolate to him without the presence of his father and brother. It highlights the concept that the King and the Heir are the life-force of the Kingdom.
