प्राप्तां सुमहतीं प्रीतिं प्रतीतां तां हतद्विषम् ।
उपस्थास्यसि कौसल्यां दासीवत्त्वं कृताञ्जलिः ॥२-८-१०॥
Prāptāṃ sumahatīṃ prītiṃ pratītāṃ tāṃ hatadviṣam |
Upasthāsyasi Kausalyāṃ dāsīvattvaṃ kṛtāñjaliḥ ॥2-8-10॥
Translation
You will wait upon that Kausalya—who has attained great joy, is renowned, and has destroyed her enemies—like a maidservant with folded hands.

अपने शत्रुओं को नष्ट करके विख्यात और परम प्रसन्नता को प्राप्त उस कौसल्या की तुम हाथ जोड़कर, दासी की भांति सेवा करोगी।
English Commentary
Manthara constructs an atmosphere of fear here. She portrays Kaikeyi not as a queen, but as a future servant. By using the term 'hatadviṣam' (one who has destroyed her enemies), she implies that Kausalya has diplomatically won the war for succession, leaving Kaikeyi as the defeated party. For a proud queen, the mere imagery of standing 'kṛtāñjaliḥ' (with folded hands) before anyone, especially a co-wife, is unbearable. Manthara’s objective is to wound Kaikeyi’s pride and provoke a reaction by painting a humiliating picture of her future subservience.

मंथरा यहाँ भय का वातावरण निर्मित कर रही है। वह कैकेयी को एक रानी के रूप में नहीं, बल्कि भविष्य की एक दासी के रूप में चित्रित करती है। 'हतद्विषम्' (जिसने शत्रुओं का नाश कर दिया हो) शब्द का प्रयोग करके वह यह संकेत देती है कि कौसल्या ने कूटनीति से बाजी मार ली है और कैकेयी अब पराजित पक्ष है। एक स्वाभिमानी रानी के लिए किसी और के सामने, विशेषकर अपनी सौत के सामने, 'कृताञ्जलिः' (हाथ जोड़े हुए) खड़े रहने की कल्पना ही असहनीय है। मंथरा का उद्देश्य कैकेयी के अहंकार को चोट पहुँचाना है।
