त्वाम् दृष्ट्वा पुत्र जीवामि रामे सभ्रातृके गते ।
वृत्ते दशरथे राज्नि नाथ एकः त्वम् अद्य नः ॥२-८७-१०॥
Tvām dṛṣṭvā putra jīvāmi rāme sabhrātṛke gate |
Vṛtte daśarathe rājni nātha ekaḥ tvam adya naḥ ॥2-87-10॥
Translation
Seeing you, O Son, I continue to live, now that Rama has gone with his brother and King Dasharatha has passed away. Today, you are our only protector.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे पुत्र! राम के (लक्ष्मण सहित) चले जाने पर और राजा दशरथ की मृत्यु हो जाने पर, अब मैं तुम्हें देखकर ही जीवित हूँ। आज हमारे एकमात्र नाथ (रक्षक) तुम ही हो।
English Commentary
This verse underscores the tragic irony of Bharata's position. Kausalya declares, "Seeing you, I live." The mother of the exiled rightful heir is forced by circumstance to find her anchor in the son of the usurper. The phrase nātha ekaḥ (the only protector) formally transfers the role of the patriarch from Dasharatha to Bharata in her eyes. For Bharata, who desires only to be a subordinate to Rama, being called the "only protector" by Rama's grieving mother is likely agonizing. It highlights the complete collapse of the previous royal structure, leaving Bharata as the reluctant pillar holding up the grief-stricken family.

यह श्लोक कौशल्या की असहायता और निर्भरता को चित्रित करता है। 'त्वाम् दृष्ट्वा पुत्र जीवामि'—यह वाक्य भरत के लिए अत्यंत भारी है। जिस माता के पुत्र का अधिकार छीनकर भरत को दिया गया, वही माता अब कह रही है कि वह भरत को देखकर ही जीवित है। 'नाथ एकः त्वम्' कहकर कौशल्या ने भरत को पिता और राजा का स्थान दे दिया है। यह भरत के 'वैराग्य' और 'भक्ति' की अग्नि परीक्षा है। जहाँ कैकेयी ने भरत को राजा बनाने के लिए षड्यंत्र किया, वहीं कौशल्या विवशता में भरत को राजा स्वीकार कर रही हैं, जो भरत के लिए सिंहासन से भी अधिक कष्टदायक है।
