पुत्र व्याधिर् न ते कच्चित् शरीरम् परिबाधते ।
अद्य राज कुलस्य अस्य त्वद् अधीनम् हि जीवितम् ॥२-८७-९॥
Putra vyādhir na te kaccit śarīram paribādhate |
Adya rāja-kulasya asya tvad-adhīnam hi jīvitam ॥2-87-9॥
Translation
O Son, I hope no disease is tormenting your body? For today, the very life and survival of this royal lineage depends entirely on you.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे पुत्र! क्या कोई व्याधि (रोग) तुम्हारे शरीर को कष्ट तो नहीं दे रही है? क्योंकि आज इस राजकुल का जीवन पूर्ण रूप से तुम्हारे ही अधीन है।
English Commentary
Kausalya’s inquiry reflects both maternal concern and a stark realization of the political vacuum. By asking if disease troubles him, she highlights that Bharata's physical well-being is now critical for the state. The phrase tvad-adhīnam hi jīvitam (the life depends on you) places an immense burden on Bharata. Technically, with Dasharatha dead and Rama exiled, Bharata is the de facto anchor of the Ikshvaku lineage. For Bharata, who considers himself a servant of Rama, this assertion likely deepens his guilt and resolve to return the kingdom to Rama. It shows Kausalya has accepted the reality that the survival of the dynasty currently rests on Bharata’s shoulders.
