वसन्तम् भ्रातुर् अर्थाय शत्रुघ्नो मा अनुवत्स्यति ।
लक्ष्मणेन सह तु आर्यो अयोध्याम् पालयिष्यति ॥ ॥२-८८-२८॥
Vasantam bhrātur arthāya śatrughno mā anuvatsyati । Lakṣmaṇena saha tu āryo ayodhyām pālayiṣyati ॥ ॥2-88-28॥
Translation
"Shatrughna will stay with me while I dwell (in the forest) for the sake of my brother; and the noble Arya (Rama), along with Lakshmana, will protect/rule Ayodhya."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"भाई (राम) के निमित्त वन में रहते हुए शत्रुघ्न मेरे साथ रहेंगे, और आर्य (राम) लक्ष्मण के साथ अयोध्या का पालन (शासन) करेंगे।"
English Commentary
Bharata completes his substitution plan with a symmetrical arrangement. Just as Lakshmana accompanied Rama, Shatrughna will accompany Bharata in the forest substitute role. Meanwhile, Rama (Arya) and Lakshmana should return to rule Ayodhya. Bharata envisions a complete reversal of roles. He assumes Shatrughna’s consent, taking for granted that his younger brother shares his devotion and willingness to sacrifice. This proposal shows Bharata’s desperate attempt to fix the "mistake" of the exile using a logical, albeit emotionally driven, compromise.

भरत अपनी योजना को विस्तार देते हैं। वे जानते हैं कि राम अकेले राज्य नहीं कर सकते, उन्हें सहायक की आवश्यकता होगी। इसलिए वे लक्ष्मण को राम के साथ अयोध्या भेजने का प्रस्ताव रखते हैं। और स्वयं वन में अकेले न रहकर शत्रुघ्न को अपना साथी बनाते हैं। यह योजना 'युगल-बदलाव' (Pair-swap) जैसी है: राम-लक्ष्मण अयोध्या में, और भरत-शत्रुघ्न वन में। भरत को लगता है कि यह सबसे न्यायपूर्ण समाधान है। इससे माताओं का दुख भी दूर होगा और पिता का वचन भी निभ जाएगा।
