तव दैवासुरे युद्धे सहराजर्षिभिः पतिः ।
अगच्चत्त्वामुपादाय देवराजस्य साह्यकृत् ॥२-९-११॥
tava daivāsure yuddhe saharājarṣibhiḥ patiḥ |
agacchattvāmupādāya devarājasya sāhyakṛt ॥2-9-11॥
Translation
"In the war between the Gods and the Demons, your husband, along with other royal sages, went to assist the King of Gods [Indra], taking you along with him."

English Commentary
- The Foundation of the Plot: Manthara here begins the narration of the backstory that serves as the specific mechanism for the plot against Rama. She is reminding Kaikeyi of the Sambarasura war. By invoking this specific memory, she prepares the ground to demand the two boons (varas) that Kaikeyi earned during this conflict.\n\n2. Kaikeyi's Unique Status: The phrase tvām upādāya ("taking you along") is historically significant. It highlights that Kaikeyi was not a delicate queen confined to the palace. She was a warrior queen, skilled enough in charioteering to accompany the Emperor into a cosmic war zone. This reminds Kaikeyi of her own strength and agency, which Manthara is now manipulating for a destructive purpose.\n\n3. The Cosmic Stakes: The war is described as daivāsure (between Devas and Asuras). This emphasizes the grandeur of Dasharatha. He was an ally to Indra himself.
