दिशमास्थाय वै देवि दक्षिणां दण्डकान् प्रति ।
वैजयन्तमिति क्यातं पुरं यत्र तिमिध्वजः ॥२-९-१२॥

diśamāsthāya vai devi dakṣiṇāṃ daṇḍakān prati |
vaijayantamiti khyātaṃ puraṃ yatra timidhvajaḥ ॥2-9-12॥

Translation

"O Queen, in the southern direction, towards the region of the Dandaka forest, there is a city celebrated as Vaijayanta, where the demon Timidhvaja lived."

English Commentary

  1. Timidhvaja (Sambarasura): The demon mentioned here as Timidhvaja is referred to as Sambara (or Sambarasura) in other contexts. The name Timidhvaja implies that his military standard or flag bore the emblem of the Timi (a legendary, massive whale-like sea creature), symbolizing his overwhelming power.

  2. Geographical Foreshadowing: Manthara explicitly mentions the Dandaka forest (daṇḍakān prati) as the location of this ancient war. This serves as a dark irony: the location where Dasharatha once fought as a hero to protect the cosmos is the same region (Dandaka) where Manthara is about to send Rama into exile.

  3. The City of Vaijayanta: The city named Vaijayanta (meaning "The Victorious") was the stronghold of the Asuras.
