तौ वरौ याच भर्तारं भरतस्याभिषेचनम् ।
प्रव्राजनं तु रामस्य त्वं वर्षाणि चतुर्दश ॥ ॥२-९-२०॥

Translation
Ask your husband for those two boons: the coronation of Bharata and the exile of Rama for fourteen years.

तुम अपने पति (महाराज दशरथ) से उन दो वरदानों की याचना करो— (एक से) भरत का राज्याभिषेक और (दूसरे से) राम का चौदह वर्षों के लिए वनवास (मांगो)।
English Commentary
This verse represents the definitive turning point in the epic, where Manthara's conspiracy takes concrete shape. Moving from persuasion to dictation, she instructs Kaikeyi on exactly how to utilize the two dormant boons. She specifies two distinct demands: the throne ('abhishechanam') for Bharata and exile ('pravrajanam') for Rama. The stipulation of 'fourteen years' is a calculated strategic move by Manthara. She understands that a short absence might keep Rama in the public memory, but fourteen years is a sufficient duration for a new king (Bharata) to consolidate power and for the subjects' loyalty to shift. By demanding Rama's banishment alongside Bharata's coronation, Manthara ensures that the former heir is removed physically and politically, leaving the field entirely open for Kaikeyi's son.

यह श्लोक रामायण की कथा का एक निर्णायक मोड़ है, जहाँ मंथरा अपनी कूटनीति को अंतिम रूप देती है। अब तक वह कैकेयी को केवल उकसा रही थी, लेकिन यहाँ वह स्पष्ट निर्देश देती है कि उन दो वरदानों का प्रयोग कैसे करना है। वह दो अलग-अलग मांगें रखती है: भरत के लिए 'अभिषेचनम्' (राज्याभिषेक) और राम के लिए 'प्रव्राजनम्' (देशनिकाला या वनवास)। यहाँ 'चतुर्दश वर्षाणि' (चौदह वर्ष) की विशिष्ट अवधि का उल्लेख मंथरा की दूरदर्शिता को दर्शाता है। उसका मानना था कि चौदह वर्ष का समय इतना लंबा होता है कि प्रजा राम को भूल जाएगी और भरत का शासन और प्रभाव पूरी तरह से स्थापित हो जाएगा। मंथरा यह सुनिश्चित करना चाहती है कि राम केवल गद्दी से दूर न हों, बल्कि राज्य से भी दूर चले जाएँ ताकि भरत के मार्ग में कोई बाधा न रहे।
