Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
एवम् उक्तो भरद्वाजो वाल्मीकेन महात्मना।
प्रायच्छत मुनेः तस्य वल्कलम् नियतः गुरोः ॥१-२-७॥
evam uktaḥ bharadvājaḥ vālmīkena mahātmanā |
prāyacchata muneḥ tasya valkalam niyataḥ guroḥ ॥1-2-7॥
Translation
Thus having been instructed by the great-souled Vālmīki, the obedient Bharadvāja gave the bark garment to that sage, his Guru.

इस प्रकार महात्मा वाल्मीकि द्वारा संबोधित किए जाने पर भरद्वाज ने अपने गुरु को वल्कल वस्त्र दिया।
English Commentary
This verse serves as a brief but important acknowledgment of the disciple's duty and obedience, completing the immediate action of preparing for the bath. The key word here is 'niyataḥ', which means obedient or self-controlled. Bharadvāja, upon being instructed by his Guru, immediately and with self-control fulfills his duty. This highlights the ideal relationship between a student and a teacher in the Vedic tradition: the disciple must be respectful, attentive, and swift in executing the Guru's command. Vālmīki is referred to as 'mahātmanā' (the great-souled one), an epithet for profound spiritual figures, emphasizing his deep austerity, wisdom, and nobility of character.
