गंगाम् अन्वगमन् प्रीताः सर्वे जल चराः च ये ।
यतो भगीरथो राजा ततो गंगा यशस्विनी ॥ ॥१-४३-३२॥
Gaṅgām anvagaman prītāḥ sarve jala carāḥ ca ye |
Yato bhagīratho rājā tato gaṅgā yaśasvinī ॥1-43-32॥
Translation
All the aquatic creatures followed the Ganga with great delight. Whichever direction King Bhagiratha took, the illustrious Ganga followed him there.

जल में रहने वाले अन्य सभी जीव भी प्रसन्न होकर गंगाजी के पीछे हो लिए। जिधर-जिधर राजा भगीरथ जाते थे, उधर-उधर ही यशस्विनी गंगा जाती थीं।
English Commentary
This verse illustrates the harmony between nature and the divine mission. The joy of the aquatic creatures indicates that the Ganga brings life and happiness to all levels of existence, not just spiritual liberation for humans. The phrase 'Yato Bhagiratho... tato Ganga' (Where Bhagiratha went, there went Ganga) is structurally significant. It establishes the theme of guidance and submission. Despite being a powerful celestial force capable of crushing the earth, the Ganga submits to the path carved by Bhagiratha’s piety. It is a profound metaphor for spiritual leadership: sheer power (Shakti) needs direction and purpose (Sankalpa). Bhagiratha acts as the channel through which divine grace flows into the world. The epithet 'Yashasvini' (illustrious/glorious) implies that by following the righteous king, the river’s own glory was enhanced, as she was fulfilling her destiny of saving the Sagaras.

यहाँ गंगा के प्रवाह की गतिशीलता और भगीरथ के नेतृत्व का सुंदर वर्णन है। 'प्रीताः सर्वे जल चराः' यह दर्शाता है कि गंगा का जल न केवल मनुष्यों के लिए, बल्कि समस्त जलचर प्राणियों के लिए भी आनंददायी और प्राणपोषक है। यह प्रकृति के संतुलन और जल के महत्व को भी इंगित करता है। श्लोक का दूसरा भाग अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण है—'यतो भगीरथो राजा ततो गंगा यशस्विनी'। यह पंक्ति सिद्ध करती है कि शक्ति (गंगा) को दिशा देने के लिए संकल्प (भगीरथ) की आवश्यकता होती है। गंगा स्वतंत्र और वेगवती हैं, फिर भी उन्होंने एक अनुशासित भक्त की भांति भगीरथ का अनुसरण किया। यह संबंध भगवान और भक्त के बीच के प्रेम को दर्शाता है; जहाँ भक्त का संकल्प सच्चा होता है, वहाँ ईश्वरीय कृपा उसी दिशा में प्रवाहित होती है। भगीरथ का रथ आगे-आगे था और पतित-पावनी गंगा उनके पीछे, मानो राजा मार्ग दिखा रहे हों और दिव्यता उनका अनुगम कर रही हो।
