Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
गन्धर्व यक्ष प्रवराः स किंनर महोरगाः ।
सर्पाः च अप्सरसो राम भगीरथ रथ अनुगाः ॥ ॥१-४३-३१॥
Gandharva yakṣa pravarāḥ sa kiṃnara mahoragāḥ |
Sarpāḥ ca apsaraso rāma bhagīratha ratha anugāḥ ॥1-43-31॥
Translation
O Rama! The eminent Gandharvas, Yakshas, Kinnaras, great serpents (Mahoragas), snakes, and Apsaras followed the chariot of Bhagiratha (along with the Ganga).

हे राम! गन्धर्व, यक्ष, किन्नर, बड़े-बड़े नाग (महोरग), सर्प और अप्सराएँ—ये सभी भगीरथ के रथ के पीछे-पीछे (गंगाजी के साथ) चलने लगे।
English Commentary
This verse captures the celestial magnitude of the Ganga’s descent. It was not merely the flow of water following a king; it was a cosmic procession. By addressing Rama directly, Sage Vishwamitra emphasizes that beings from various dimensions—Gandharvas (celestial musicians), Yakshas (nature spirits), and Mahoragas (great serpents)—were drawn to the event. They followed Bhagiratha’s chariot because the Ganga herself was following it. This imagery elevates Bhagiratha’s status; normally, mortals follow the gods, but here, due to the power of his penance, divine beings and the holiest of rivers are following a mortal king. It signifies that when a noble soul undertakes a selfless mission (Purushartha) for the liberation of ancestors, the entire cosmos aligns to support and witness the journey. The distinction between heaven and earth blurs in the presence of such sanctity.

यह श्लोक उस अलौकिक दृश्य का वर्णन करता है जब गंगा पृथ्वी पर अवतरित होकर भगीरथ के पीछे चल पड़ीं। यह केवल एक नदी का प्रवाह नहीं था, बल्कि एक ब्रह्मांडीय उत्सव था। हे राम! ऋषि विश्वामित्र यहाँ यह स्पष्ट कर रहे हैं कि गंगा का आगमन तीनों लोकों के लिए एक उत्सव के समान था। गन्धर्व, यक्ष, और किन्नर जैसे देव-योनि के प्राणी, जो सामान्यतः स्वर्ग या विशिष्ट लोकों में रहते हैं, वे भी गंगा के महात्म्य के कारण पृथ्वी की ओर आकर्षित हुए। 'महोरगाः' और 'सर्पाः' का उल्लेख यह दर्शाता है कि पाताल और पृथ्वी के रहस्यमयी प्राणी भी इस पवित्र धारा का अनुगमन कर रहे थे। यह दृश्य भगीरथ की तपस्या की महिमा को भी रेखांकित करता है; एक नश्वर राजा के रथ के पीछे न केवल एक दिव्य नदी, बल्कि पूरी देव-सृष्टि चल रही थी। यह शोभायात्रा धर्म और तप की विजय का प्रतीक है।
