Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
पद्मकोश पलाशानि द्रष्टुम् दृष्टिः हि मन्यते ।
सीताया नेत्र कोशाभ्याम् सदृशान् इति लक्ष्मण ॥ ॥४-१-७१॥
padmakośa palāśāni draṣṭum dṛṣṭiḥ hi manyate । sītāyā netra kośābhyām sadṛśān iti lakṣmaṇa ॥ ॥4-1-71॥
Translation
O Lakshmana! My sight indeed desires to gaze at the petals of the lotus buds, considering them to be similar to Sita's eyes.

हे लक्ष्मण! मेरी दृष्टि कमल की कलियों/पंखुड़ियों (पद्मकोश पलाशानि) को देखने के लिए लालायित है, केवल इसलिए क्योंकि वे सीता के नेत्र-कोशों के सदृश (समान) हैं।
English Commentary
Rama explains the motivation behind his gaze. He tells Lakshmana that his eyes yearn to look at the 'padmakosha palashani' (petals of the lotus buds/cups). This is not out of an appreciation for nature per se, but because they are 'sadrishan' (similar) to Sita's 'netra koshabhyam' (cup-like eyes/eyelids). Rama is actively seeking visual echoes of his wife in the landscape. This behavior is typical of a separated lover who clings to any object that resembles the beloved. It shows that his engagement with reality is filtered entirely through his memory of Sita. He appreciates the lotus only insofar as it serves as a proxy for her eyes.

राम लक्ष्मण को बताते हैं कि वे प्रकृति को क्यों निहार रहे हैं। वे कहते हैं कि उनकी 'दृष्टि' (नज़र) कमल की पंखुड़ियों ('पद्मकोश पलाशानि') को देखना 'मन्यते' (चाहती है/मानती है), लेकिन उसके पीछे एक विशेष कारण है। उन्हें कमलों के सौंदर्य से प्रेम नहीं है, बल्कि इसलिए कि वे 'सीताया नेत्र कोशाभ्याम् सदृशान्' (सीता के नेत्रों के समान) हैं। राम दुनिया में सीता के प्रतिबिंब खोज रहे हैं। वे प्रकृति के उन तत्वों को ढूंढ रहे हैं जो उन्हें उनकी प्रिया की झलक दे सकें। यह 'सादृश्य' (similarity) अलंकार का प्रयोग है। राम का यह कथन उनके एकनिष्ठ प्रेम और विरह में स्मृति की तीव्रता को दर्शाता है—वे हर सुंदर वस्तु में सीता को ही देखते हैं।
