Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
सौमित्रे पश्य पम्पाया दक्षिणे गिरि सानुषु ।
पुष्पितान् कर्णिकारस्य यष्टिम् परम शोभिताम् ॥ ॥४-१-७३॥
Saumitre pashya pampāyā dakṣiṇe giri sānuṣu । Puṣpitān karṇikārasya yaṣṭim parama śobhitām ॥ ॥4-1-73॥
Translation
O Saumitri (Lakshmana)! Look at the southern peaks of the mountain near Pampa. Behold the flowering Karnikara trees; they appear exceedingly beautiful, standing tall like golden staffs.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे सौमित्र (लक्ष्मण)! पम्पा सरोवर के दक्षिण में पर्वत के शिखरों पर खिले हुए इन कर्णिकार के वृक्षों को देखो, ये सुवर्णमय डंडों (ध्वज-दंड) के समान परम सुशोभित हो रहे हैं।
English Commentary
Sri Rama draws Lakshmana's attention to the unique visual spectacle on the southern ridges of the mountain near Pampa Sarovar. He points out the Karnikara trees, which are known to shed their leaves before flowering, leaving them covered entirely in bright yellow blossoms. Rama uses a striking metaphor here, comparing these slender, flower-laden trees to "golden staffs" or ceremonial flagpoles planted on the mountain peaks. This imagery highlights the vibrancy of spring, where the flora acts as nature’s decoration. However, for Rama, this golden radiance serves as a poignant reminder of the beauty he cannot currently share with Sita. The verse captures the dual nature of his experience: an objective appreciation of the landscape's grandeur and the subjective undertone of his separation.

श्री राम यहाँ लक्ष्मण का ध्यान प्रकृति की विशिष्ट शोभा की ओर आकर्षित करते हैं। वसंत ऋतु में कर्णिकार के वृक्ष पीले फूलों से लद जाते हैं और उनमें पत्तियां लगभग नहीं रहतीं। इस दृश्य का वर्णन करते हुए राम उपमा अलंकार का प्रयोग करते हैं। वे कहते हैं कि ये वृक्ष मात्र पेड़ नहीं लग रहे, बल्कि ऐसा प्रतीत हो रहा है जैसे पर्वत के शिखरों पर सोने के दंड या ध्वज-स्तंभ गाड़ दिए गए हों। 'परम शोभिताम्' शब्द से वे इसकी अलौकिक सुंदरता को व्यक्त करते हैं। एक विरही के लिए वसंत के ये चमकीले रंग आँखों को सुख देने के बजाय मन में सीता की स्मृति को और गहरा करते हैं। प्रकृति का यह 'सुवर्णमय' रूप राम के लिए सीता के बिना फीका है, फिर भी वे लक्ष्मण को इस अद्भुत दृश्य का साक्षी बनाते हैं।
