रात्रिः शशाङ्कोदितसौम्यवक्त्रा तारागणोन्मीलितचारुनेत्रा ।
ज्योत्स्नांशुकप्रावरणा विभाति नारीव शुक्लांशुकसंवृताङ्गी ॥४-३०-४५॥
rātriḥ śaśāṅkoditasaumyavaktrā tārāgaṇonmīlitacārunetrā |
jyotsnāṃśukaprāvaraṇā vibhāti nārīva śuklāṃśukasaṃvṛtāṅgī ॥4-30-45॥
Translation
With the risen moon as her lovely face, the clusters of stars as her open beautiful eyes, and the moonlight as her garment, the night shines like a woman with limbs draped in white cloth.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उदित हुआ चंद्रमा जिसका सुंदर मुख है, तारे ही जिसके खुले हुए सुंदर नेत्र हैं और चांदनी ही जिसका वस्त्र है, वह रात्रि सफेद वस्त्रों से ढके हुए अंगों वाली स्त्री की भांति सुशोभित हो रही है।
English Commentary
This verse personifies the Night. The night appears as a beautiful woman draped in white (Shuklāṃśuka - moonlight). The description is deeply romantic. While Rama points this out to Lakshmana, the imagery inevitably evokes Sita. Sita's face is moon-like, her eyes star-like. For Rama, this nocturnal beauty, rather than bringing peace, exacerbates his viraha (separation), as the one with whom he should share this beauty is absent. The verse captures the duality of Rama's state: his appreciation of nature's aesthetic alongside the stinging pain of his solitude.

यह श्लोक रात्रि का मानवीकरण (Personification) करता है। रात्रि एक 'अभिसारिका' नायिका की तरह है जो श्वेत वस्त्र (चांदनी) पहन कर तैयार है। यह वर्णन अत्यंत शृंगारिक है। राम लक्ष्मण से यह कह रहे हैं, किन्तु उनके मन में सीता की छवि है। सीता का मुख चंद्रमा समान और नेत्र तारों समान सुंदर हैं। रात्रि की यह सुंदरता राम के लिए सुखद होने के बजाय उनके वियोग को और बढ़ा रही है क्योंकि जिसके साथ इस सुंदरता का आनंद लेना था, वह (सीता) पास नहीं है। यह प्रकृति वर्णन राम की मानसिक स्थिति—सौंदर्य बोध और विरह वेदना के द्वंद्व—को प्रकट करता है।
