Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
चञ्चच्चन्द्रकरस्पर्शहर्षोन्मीलिततारका ।
अहो रागवती संध्या जहाति स्वयमम्बरम् ॥४-३०-४४॥
cañcaccandrakarasparśaharṣonmīlitatārakā |
aho rāgavatī saṃdhyā jahāti svayamambaram ॥4-30-44॥
Translation
Oh! The twilight, filled with passion (red glow), with stars opening up like eyes in joy at the touch of the trembling moonbeams, is abandoning the sky of her own accord.
हिंदी अनुवाद
अहो! यह अनुराग से भरी (लाल रंग वाली) संध्या, चंचल चंद्रमा की किरणों के स्पर्श से हर्षित होकर (तारे रूपी) आँखों को खोल रही है और अब स्वयं आकाश को छोड़ रही है।
English Commentary
This verse is a marvelous example of Valmiki's poetic genius, utilizing Samasokti (speech of brevity/metaphor). Twilight (Sandhya) is personified as a heroine (Nayika), and the Moon as her lover. Rāgavatī means both "red-hued" and "filled with passion." Just as a lover thrills at the touch of her beloved and yields space, the twilight fades. Rama appreciates this beauty, but the exclamation "Aho!" carries a mix of wonder and deep pain, as he witnesses this romantic cosmic interplay while enduring his own separation from Sita.

यह श्लोक वाल्मीकि की काव्य प्रतिभा का अद्भुत उदाहरण है। यहाँ 'समासोक्ति' और 'रूपक' अलंकार है। संध्या एक नायिका (प्रेमिका) है और आकाश या चंद्रमा उसका प्रेमी। 'रागवती' का अर्थ 'लाल रंग वाली' भी है और 'प्रेम से भरी हुई' भी है। जैसे एक प्रेमिका अपने प्रेमी (चंद्रमा) के स्पर्श से रोमांचित होती है और लज्जा या समर्पण वश स्थान छोड़ देती है, वैसे ही संध्या जा रही है। राम इस सौंदर्य को देख रहे हैं, परन्तु 'अहो' शब्द में विस्मय के साथ-साथ एक गहरी टीस भी है कि वे इस रसमय वातावरण में अकेले हैं।
