सुप्तैकहंसं कुमुदैरुपेतं महाह्रदस्थं सलिलं विभाति ।
घनैर्विमुक्तं निशि पूर्णचन्द्रं तारागणकीर्णमिवान्तरिक्षम् ॥४-३०-४७॥
suptaikahaṃsaṃ kumudairupetaṃ mahāhradasthaṃ salilaṃ vibhāti |
ghanairvimuktaṃ niśi pūrṇacandraṃ tārāgaṇakīrṇamivāntarikṣam ॥4-30-47॥
Translation
The water of the great lake, filled with water-lilies and hosting a single sleeping swan, shines like the cloudless night sky scattered with stars and adorned with the full moon.
हिंदी अनुवाद
कुमुद (कोकाबेली) के फूलों से युक्त विशाल सरोवर का जल, जिसमें एक हंस सोया हुआ है, बादलों से मुक्त, तारों से भरे हुए और पूर्ण चंद्रमा से युक्त रात्रि के आकाश जैसा सुशोभित हो रहा है।
English Commentary
This verse is a beautiful example of a simile (Upama). The lake represents the sky, the lilies are the stars, and the single sleeping swan is the full moon. The phrase suptaikahaṃsaṃ (one sleeping swan) mirrors Rama's solitary state. Although the scene is tranquil and picturesque, the emphasis on 'one' underscores the loneliness Rama feels. The clarity of the autumn night and the stillness of the lake are captivating, yet for a separated lover, this silence can be piercing. Rama points this out to Lakshmana to illustrate the parallels found in nature.

यह श्लोक उपमा अलंकार का सुंदर उदाहरण है। सरोवर आकाश है, कुमुद के फूल तारे हैं, और सोया हुआ हंस पूर्ण चंद्रमा है। 'सुप्तैकहंसं' (एक सोया हुआ हंस) शब्द राम की एकाकी अवस्था को प्रतिबिंबित करता है। यद्यपि दृश्य शांत और रमणीय है, लेकिन 'एक' शब्द उस अकेलेपन को रेखांकित करता है जो राम महसूस कर रहे हैं। शरद ऋतु की रात्रि की निर्मलता और सरोवर की शांति दोनों ही मन को मोहने वाली हैं, किन्तु एक विरही के लिए यह सन्नाटा काटने को दौड़ता है। राम लक्ष्मण को यह दिखाकर प्रकृति की साम्यता समझा रहे हैं।
