लाङ्गूलं संप्रदीप्तं तु द्रष्टुं तस्य हनूमतः ।
सहस्त्रीबालवृद्धाश्च जग्मुः प्रीता निशाचराः ।

Lāṅgūlaṃ saṃpradīptaṃ tu draṣṭuṃ tasya hanūmataḥ । Sahastrībālavṛddhāśca jagmuḥ prītā niśācarāḥ । । ॥5-53-9॥
Translation
To witness the burning tail of Hanuman, the Rakshasas—including women, children, and the elderly—went forth with great delight.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उस हनुमान जी की जलती हुई पूँछ को देखने के लिए स्त्रियाँ, बच्चे और बूढ़े—सभी राक्षस अत्यंत प्रसन्न होकर गए।
English Commentary
This verse depicts the mentality of the common citizens of Lanka. Hanuman, a mighty warrior, was being humiliated by having his tail set on fire, yet for the Rakshasas, this was a spectacle of entertainment. The inclusion of women, children, and the elderly (sahastrībālavṛddhāśca) indicates that the entire populace was driven by morbid curiosity and sadistic pleasure (prītā). Valmiki highlights the demonic nature (Rakshasa pravritti) which finds joy in the suffering and humiliation of others. Crucially, this creates dramatic irony; the citizens are delighting in the very fire that Hanuman will soon use to incinerate their city. Their collective ignorance stands in stark contrast to the looming disaster.

यह श्लोक लंका के सामान्य नागरिकों की मानसिकता को दर्शाता है। हनुमान जी, जो एक महाशक्तिशाली वानर वीर हैं, उन्हें बंदी बनाकर और उनकी पूँछ में आग लगाकर अपमानित किया जा रहा था। इस दृश्य को देखने के लिए राक्षसों में कुतूहल था। 'सहस्त्रीबालवृद्धाश्च' शब्द का प्रयोग यह बताता है कि यह केवल सैनिकों का समूह नहीं था, बल्कि पूरी लंका की जनता तमाशा देखने उमड़ पड़ी थी। वाल्मीकि जी यहाँ राक्षसी प्रवृत्ति का चित्रण करते हैं, जहाँ दूसरों की पीड़ा और अपमान में आनंद (प्रीता) अनुभव किया जाता है। उन्हें इस बात का भान नहीं था कि जिस अग्नि को वे मनोरंजन का साधन मान रहे हैं, वही शीघ्र ही उनके विनाश का कारण बनने वाली है।
