धन्यं यशस्यमायुष्यं राज्ञां च विजयावहम् ।
आदिकाव्यमिदं त्वार्षं पुरा वाल्मीकिना कृतम् ॥६-१३१-१०७॥
dhanyaṃ yaśasyamāyuṣyaṃ rājñāṃ ca vijayāvaham |
ādikāvyamidaṃ tvārṣaṃ purā vālmīkinā kṛtam ॥6-131-107॥
Translation
This first epic (Adikavya), composed of old by Sage Valmiki, is auspicious, brings fame, increases longevity, and grants victory to kings.

प्राचीन काल में महर्षि वाल्मीकि द्वारा रचा गया यह 'आदिकाव्य' धन्य, यश देने वाला, आयु बढ़ाने वाला और राजाओं को विजय दिलाने वाला है।
English Commentary
Sage Valmiki is the 'Adikavi' and the Ramayana is the 'Adikavya,' as it is the first poetic work in human history. The inclusion of 'fame' and 'victory' in its benefits suggests that the epic is replete with lessons on leadership. It is a voice born of the sages' penance, carrying eternal truths.
