Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
वैदेहीम् लक्ष्मणम् रामम् नेत्रैर् अनिमिषैर् इव ।
आश्चर्य भूतान् ददृशुः सर्वे ते वन वासिनः ॥३-१-१४॥
vaidehīm lakṣmaṇam rāmam netrair animiṣair iva |
āścarya bhūtān dadṛśuḥ sarve te vana vāsinaḥ ॥3-1-14॥
Translation
All those forest-dwellers gazed at Vaidehi, Lakshmana, and Rama with unblinking eyes, as if looking upon beings of wonder.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वे सभी वनवासी ऋषि, आश्चर्यचकित होकर सीता, लक्ष्मण और राम को अपलक नेत्रों (बिना पलक झपकाए) से देखने लगे, मानो वे कोई अद्भुत प्राणी हों।
English Commentary
Staring with 'animiṣair netrair' (unblinking eyes) signifies intense concentration and deep admiration. Usually, unblinking eyes are an attribute of the Devas (gods), suggesting the sages were elevated to a state of divine rapture upon seeing the trio. They viewed them as 'āścarya bhūtān'—beings of wonder. The juxtaposition of royalty walking the path of asceticism in the dangerous Dandaka forest was a miraculous sight. The sages were drinking in the vision of Dharma personified (Rama), Service personified (Lakshmana), and Devotion personified (Sita) standing together in their courtyard.

'अनिमिष' (अपलक) देखना देवताओं का गुण माना जाता है, या फिर यह अत्यधिक प्रेम और आश्चर्य की स्थिति है। ऋषियों के लिए यह दृश्य 'आश्चर्य भूतान्' (अद्भुत घटना) था। उन्होंने कभी कल्पना भी नहीं की होगी कि अयोध्या के राजकुमार और राजवधू इस घोर वन में, ऋषियों के बीच सादगी से उपस्थित होंगे। यह दृष्टि केवल शारीरिक रूप को नहीं देख रही थी, बल्कि उस त्याग और धर्मनिष्ठा को देख रही थी जिसने राम, लक्ष्मण और सीता को महलों से वन में ला खड़ा किया था। यह "दर्शन" का क्षण है, जहाँ भक्त (ऋषि) अपने आराध्य को जी भर कर देख रहे हैं।
