Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
निवेदयीत्वा धर्मज्ञाः ते तु प्रांजलयोऽब्रुवन् ।
धर्मपालो जनस्य अस्य शरण्यः च महायशाः ॥३-१-१८॥
nivedayītvā dharmajñāḥ te tu prāñjalayo'bruvan |
dharmapālo janasya asya śaraṇyaḥ ca mahāyaśāḥ ॥3-1-18॥
Translation
Having offered everything, those knowers of Dharma spoke with folded hands: "You are the Protector of Dharma, the Refuge of these people, and possessor of great fame."

अपना सब कुछ निवेदित करने के पश्चात, उन धर्मज्ञ ऋषियों ने हाथ जोड़कर (राम से) कहा—"आप इस जन समुदाय के धर्मपालक, शरणदाता और महायशस्वी हैं।"
English Commentary
The sages act here as 'Dharmajñāḥ' (Knowers of Dharma). Their statement defines Rama's role precisely. By calling him 'Dharmapāla' (Protector of Dharma) and 'Śaraṇyaḥ' (Refuge), they are implicitly invoking his duty to protect them from the Rakshasas. They speak with 'prāñjalayaḥ' (folded hands), showing respect, but the content of their speech is a reminder of the King's obligation. They have surrendered their ashram to him (Verse 17); now, by the laws of Dharma, he is ethically bound to protect them. This sets the stage for the conflict with the Rakshasas in the Dandaka forest.

ऋषियों द्वारा राम की स्तुति में 'धर्मज्ञ' शब्द का प्रयोग बताता है कि उनका कथन केवल चाटुकारिता नहीं, बल्कि धर्म का सत्य है। वे राम को तीन उपाधियाँ देते हैं: 1. धर्मपाल (धर्म की रक्षा करने वाला), 2. शरण्य (जिसकी शरण में जाया जा सके), और 3. महायशा (महान कीर्ति वाला)। ऋषियों ने हाथ जोड़कर (प्रांजलयो) यह बात कही, जो उनकी विनम्रता है, लेकिन उनके शब्दों में एक अधिकार भी है—वे राम को उनके कर्तव्य (राजधर्म) की याद दिला रहे हैं। वे कह रहे हैं कि आप केवल अतिथि नहीं, हमारे रक्षक भी हैं।
