Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
कुश चीर परिक्षिप्तम् ब्राह्म्या लक्ष्म्या समावृतम् ।
यथा प्रदीप्तम् दुर्दर्शम् गगने सूर्य मण्डलम् ॥३-१-२॥
kuśa cīra parikṣiptam brāhmyā lakṣmyā samāvṛtam |
yathā pradīptam durdarśam gagane sūrya maṇḍalam ॥3-1-2॥
Translation
That circle of hermitages was scattered with Kusha grass and bark garments, and enveloped in Brahmic luster (spiritual glory), appearing like the blazing solar orb in the sky, difficult to look upon.

वह आश्रम-मण्डल कुश और वल्कल वस्त्रों से घिरा हुआ था और ब्रह्मतेज से इस प्रकार संपन्न था, जैसे आकाश में प्रदीप्त सूर्य-मण्डल, जिसे देख पाना अत्यंत कठिन होता है।
English Commentary
This verse vividly describes the physical and metaphysical atmosphere of the hermitage. Physically, it is marked by simplicity—Kusha grass and bark garments (valkala) used by ascetics are scattered about. Metaphysically, the poet Valmiki uses a powerful simile, comparing the hermitage to the 'Solar Orb' (Surya Mandalam). Just as the midday sun is difficult to look at directly due to its blinding brilliance, the hermitage is enveloped in 'Brāhmyā lakṣmyā' (the glory of Brahman/Vedic knowledge). This indicates that the collective spiritual energy of the sages was palpable and intense, radiating a purity that rivaled the sun itself.

यह श्लोक आश्रम के वातावरण का सजीव चित्रण करता है। वहाँ चारों ओर पवित्र कुश घास और तपस्वियों द्वारा पहने जाने वाले वल्कल (पेड़ की छाल के वस्त्र) बिछे हुए थे, जो अत्यंत सादगी का प्रतीक हैं। कवि वाल्मीकि यहाँ एक अद्भुत उपमा देते हैं—जैसे आकाश में चमकते हुए सूर्य को नंगी आँखों से देखना कठिन होता है, वैसे ही ब्रह्मतेज (वेदों और तपस्या का तेज) से परिपूर्ण उस आश्रम को देखना कठिन था। यहाँ भौतिक चमक की नहीं, अपितु आध्यात्मिक ऊर्जा की बात हो रही है जो इतनी प्रबल थी कि वह सूर्य के समान दैदीप्यमान प्रतीत हो रही थी। यह ऋषियों की तपःशक्ति का प्रमाण है।
