Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
शरण्यम् सर्व भूतानाम् सु संमृष्ट अजिरम् सदा ।
मृगैः बहुभिः आकीर्णम् पक्षि सन्घैः समावृतम् ॥३-१-३॥
śaraṇyam sarva bhūtānām su saṃmṛṣṭa ajiram sadā |
mṛgaiḥ bahubhiḥ ākīrṇam pakṣi sanghaiḥ samāvṛtam ॥3-1-3॥
Translation
It was a refuge for all living beings, with courtyards that were always swept clean and well-maintained, crowded with many deer and surrounded by flocks of birds.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वह स्थान सभी प्राणियों के लिए शरण देने वाला (आश्रयदाता) था। वहाँ के आंगन सदैव अच्छी तरह से बुहारे (साफ किए) हुए थे। वह स्थान बहुत से मृगों और पक्षियों के समूहों से भरा हुआ था।
English Commentary
While the previous verses focused on the overwhelming radiance of the hermitage, this verse highlights its serenity and safety. Being 'sharanyam' (a refuge) for all beings indicates the practice of absolute Ahimsa (non-violence); animals sensed no threat here. The presence of numerous deer and birds roaming freely signifies an ecosystem of trust built by the sages. The mention of 'well-swept courtyards' is significant—it reflects the internal discipline of the ascetics manifested externally. Cleanliness is a prerequisite for Vedic rituals, and despite being in a wild forest, the sages maintained impeccable order and purity in their dwelling spaces.

पिछले श्लोकों में जहाँ आश्रम के तेज का वर्णन था, यहाँ उसकी शांति और करुणा का वर्णन है। 'शरण्यम् सर्व भूतानाम्' का अर्थ है कि वह स्थान न केवल मनुष्यों के लिए, बल्कि पशु-पक्षियों के लिए भी अभयदान देने वाला था। ऋषियों की अहिंसा इतनी प्रबल थी कि वन के प्राणी वहां निर्भय होकर विचरण करते थे। 'सु संमृष्ट अजिरम्' (अच्छी तरह साफ किया गया आंगन) ऋषियों की दिनचर्या, अनुशासन और स्वच्छता के प्रति उनके आग्रह को दर्शाता है। बाहरी वन भले ही जंगली और अव्यवस्थित हो, किन्तु ऋषि का आश्रम सुव्यवस्थित और पवित्रता का केंद्र था, जहाँ प्रकृति और मनुष्य पूर्ण सामंजस्य में थे।
