Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
रक्ष नः त्वम् सह भ्रात्रा त्वम् नाथा हि वयम् वने ।
मया च एतत् वचः श्रुत्वा कार्त्स्न्येन परिपालनम् ॥ ॥३-१०-१६॥
Rakṣa naḥ tvam saha bhrātrā tvam nāthā hi vayam vane । Mayā ca etat vacaḥ śrutvā kārtsnyena paripālanam ॥ ॥3-10-16॥
Translation
“Protect us along with your brother, for you are our Lord in this forest. Having heard these words, I promised them complete protection.”
हिंदी अनुवाद
(अतः) अपने भाई के साथ आप हमारी रक्षा करें, क्योंकि इस वन में आप ही हमारे स्वामी (नाथ) हैं। उनके ये वचन सुनकर मैंने (उन्हें) पूर्ण रूप से पालन करने का (वचन दिया)।
English Commentary
The sages address Rama as 'Natha' (Lord/Protector), indicating that sovereignty is an inherent quality of Rama, not defined by his location (palace vs. forest). Even in exile, he remains the guardian of the Dharma. Rama states that upon hearing their plea, he promised 'kartsnyena paripalanam' (complete and total protection). This commitment is absolute. By recounting this to Sita, Rama explains that his course of action is now bound by a solemn pledge, which supersedes general ethical advice.

ऋषियों ने राम को वन में 'नाथ' (स्वामी/रक्षक) कहा है। भले ही राम वनवास में हैं और राजसिंहासन पर नहीं हैं, फिर भी उनका क्षत्रिय धर्म और उनका व्यक्तित्व उन्हें स्वाभाविक रूप से सबका रक्षक बनाता है। 'कार्त्स्न्येन' (पूर्ण रूप से/समग्रता से) शब्द यह दर्शाता है कि राम ने बिना किसी शर्त या संकोच के ऋषियों की रक्षा का दायित्व लिया। यह वचनबद्धता ही अब राम के लिए सर्वोच्च धर्म बन गई है, जिसके कारण वे सीता के अहिंसा के तर्क को सम्मानपूर्वक अस्वीकार कर रहे हैं।
