ऋषीणाम् दण्डकारण्ये संश्रुतम् जनकात्मजे ।
संश्रुत्य न च शक्ष्यामि जीवमानः प्रतिश्रवम् ॥ ॥३-१०-१७॥
Ṛṣīṇām daṇḍakāraṇye saṃśrutam janakātmaje । Saṃśrutya na ca śakṣyāmi jīvamānaḥ pratiśravam ॥ ॥3-10-17॥
Translation
“O daughter of Janaka, I have given my word to the sages of Dandakaranya. Having given my word, I cannot break that promise while I am still alive.”
हिंदी अनुवाद
“हे जनकनन्दिनी! मैंने दंडकारण्य के ऋषियों को (रक्षा का) वचन दिया है। और वचन देने के बाद, मैं जीवित रहते हुए अपनी प्रतिज्ञा (प्रतिश्रवम्) को नहीं तोड़ सकता।”
English Commentary
Addressing Sita as 'Janakatmaje' (Daughter of Janaka) appeals to her noble lineage, implying she inherently understands the value of a vow. Rama asserts that as long as he is 'jivamana' (alive), he cannot renege on his 'pratishravam' (promise). This defines Rama's integrity; his word is not merely a statement of intent but a binding contract with Dharma itself. To break it would be a spiritual death, far worse than physical death.

राम सीता को 'जनकात्मजे' (जनक की पुत्री) कहकर संबोधित करते हैं, जो यह स्मरण दिलाता है कि सीता स्वयं एक ऐसे कुल से हैं जो धर्म और वचन की मर्यादा को समझता है। 'जीवमानः' (जीवित रहते हुए) शब्द का प्रयोग राम के संकल्प की दृढ़ता को दिखाता है—प्राण भले ही चले जाएं, पर वचन नहीं जाना चाहिए। रघुकुल की यही रीति है—'प्राण जाई पर वचन न जाई'। राम स्पष्ट कर रहे हैं कि अब पीछे हटने का कोई मार्ग शेष नहीं है।
