मुनीनाम् अन्यथा कर्तुम् सत्यम् इष्टम् हि मे सदा ।
अपि अहम् जीवितम् जह्याम् त्वाम् वा सीते स लक्ष्मणाम् ॥ ॥३-१०-१८॥
Munīnām anyathā kartum satyam iṣṭam hi me sadā । Api aham jīvitam jahyām tvām vā sīte sa lakṣmaṇām ॥ ॥3-10-18॥
Translation
“I cannot act falsely towards the sages; Truth is always dear to me. O Sita, I might even give up my life, or you, or Lakshmana (but never my promise).”
हिंदी अनुवाद
“मुनियों से किए गए वचन को मैं अन्यथा (असत्य) नहीं कर सकता; मुझे सत्य सदा ही प्रिय है। हे सीते! (सत्य के लिए) मैं अपने जीवन का, तुम्हारा और लक्ष्मण का भी त्याग कर सकता हूँ।”
English Commentary
This is a profound and foreshadowing verse defining the Rama-Rajya ethos. Rama establishes a strict hierarchy of values where 'Satyam' (Truth/Integrity) sits at the apex, above his own life ('jivitam'), his beloved wife ('tvam va'), and his devoted brother ('sa-lakshmanam'). It reveals the terrifying discipline of his character. While it sounds harsh to a modern ear, in the context of Dharma, it elevates him as the ideal king who places duty above personal attachment. It foreshadows the tragic personal sacrifices he will eventually make for the sake of his kingly duty.

यह रामायण के सबसे वजनदार और भविष्यसूचक श्लोकों में से एक है। श्रीराम मूल्यों का एक स्पष्ट पदानुक्रम (Hierarchy of Values) स्थापित करते हैं। सबसे ऊपर 'सत्य' है। उसके बाद जीवन, पत्नी और भाई आते हैं। 'त्वाम् वा' (तुम्हें भी) कहकर राम यह कठोर सत्य प्रकट करते हैं कि धर्म-पालन के लिए वे अपने सबसे प्रिय संबंधों का भी बलिदान दे सकते हैं। यह केवल एक कथन नहीं, बल्कि भविष्य में सीता-त्याग और लक्ष्मण-त्याग की घटनाओं का बीजारोपण है। राम का प्रेम गहरा है, किन्तु उनका सत्य के प्रति आग्रह (Commitment) उससे भी ऊपर है।
