न तु प्रतिज्ञाम् संश्रुत्य ब्राह्मणेभ्यो विशेषतः ।
तत् अवश्यम् मया कार्यम् ऋषीणाम् परिपालनम् ॥ ॥३-१०-१९॥
Na tu pratijñām saṃśrutya brāhmaṇebhyo viśeṣataḥ । Tat avaśyam mayā kāryam ṛṣīṇām paripālanam ॥ ॥3-10-19॥
Translation
“...But having made a pledge, especially to the Brahmins, I cannot break it. Therefore, that task of protecting the sages must inevitably be done by me.”
हिंदी अनुवाद
“...किंतु प्रतिज्ञा करके, विशेष रूप से ब्राह्मणों से, मैं उसे तोड़ नहीं सकता। अतः ऋषियों की रक्षा का वह कार्य मुझे अवश्य करना है।”
English Commentary
Rama reiterates the inevitability ('avashyam') of his action. The qualifier 'visheshatah' (especially) regarding Brahmins emphasizes the cultural obligation of the warrior class to protect the spiritual class. Breaking a promise to those who represent the divine order would be a catastrophic failure of Dharma. Thus, the debate is settled not by refuting Sita’s philosophy of non-violence, but by superseding it with the specific, binding duty of a vowed protector.

श्रीराम पुनः अपने कर्तव्य पर जोर देते हैं। 'विशेषतः' (विशेष रूप से) शब्द महत्वपूर्ण है। क्षत्रिय का धर्म है सबकी रक्षा करना, किन्तु जो समाज के आध्यात्मिक मार्गदर्शक (ब्राह्मण/ऋषि) हैं, उनकी रक्षा करना सर्वोच्च प्राथमिकता है। 'अवश्यम्' (निश्चित रूप से) शब्द यह बताता है कि अब इस विषय में तर्क-वितर्क का कोई स्थान नहीं है। सीता के अहिंसावादी तर्कों का उत्तर राम ने अपने 'क्षत्रिय-धर्म' और 'सत्य-प्रतिज्ञा' से दिया है।
